Create a Course

Page history last edited by Philipp Schmidt 2 wks ago

Welcome to the course design process at Peer 2 Peer University!

You are about to join a community of respectful, creative, life-long learners.

For new designers P2PU offers support on two levels: a Course Design Handbook for those wanting to design independently and a collaborative Orientation with more hands-on guidance and meetings with experts in the field.

In case this is your first time here, and you are still a little unclear on how this P2PU thing work, check this out: What is a P2PU course and what does it mean to organize one?

You may have noticed that you've been directed to our wiki (wiki.p2pu.org), rather than the main site (p2pu.org). We're running the orientation on our wiki as it allows expanded collaborative freedom - perfect for a group of people working together to design courses!

If, at any point in the process, you have any trouble, please feel free to send an email to thepeople [at] p2pu.org and we will get back to you and help you out as quickly as possible.

Creating a new course is a 4 step process

  • Step 1 - Submit course proposal
  • Step 2 - Transform your accepted proposal into a course
  • Step 3 - Share your draft with the community / give and get feedback / refine
  • Step 4 - Run your course and take over the world!

When you're running your course, you won't be doing it on this wiki. This is just a workspace in which to experiment and learn. All the courses will be run on P2PU.org. Once your course is loaded into P2PU.org and up and running, it will look something like this Digital Journalism course that we ran in June/July 2010.

Step 1: Submit a Course Proposal

Firstly, you need to submit a course proposal to P2PU. We have put together a Course Proposal Form you can use. Fill it out and email it to bekka [at] p2pu.org. There's no major application process here, we just want to make sure you're a real live person. Once you get the go-ahead from Bekka, we will add you to our 'new courses' mailing list (p2pu-new-courses [at] googlegroups.com). This is the main method of communication for the group, and all new course organizers are subscribed to this list.

Step 2: Turn Your Proposal Into a Course

There are two pathways to course creation:

  1. You can join the 2010 Course Designers Orientation that will help you take your proposal and build it into a super-duper-turbo-powered course.
  2. You can work independently and use the Course Design Handbook to develop your proposal into a full course. Independent designers are still most welcome to participate in orientation events.

Step 3 - Share your draft with the community for feedback

All prospective courses at P2PU undergo a period of community review, an important part of the course design process. You will receive feedback on the content and structure of your course from varying folks involved at P2PU.  Community review will help you add the final touches. The peer review period starts on August 30 and runs until September 3rd.

Step 4 - Run your course and take over the world

By this point, you should have a fantastic course built and ready to go. Folks will be able to sign-up for your course beginning August 25 and will be open for 2 weeks. Then all the courses will start on September 15 and run for 6 weeks, until October 27. Support will still remain available to you for guidance on accepting applications, and sorting out hurdles you may come across as the course runs.
