Course Title
Producing Identities: The Practice (and Theory!) of Queer Pedagogies
Course Tweet (200 characters or less)
Looking to find ways to rethink your practice as a teacher or educator? This course presents some ideas and offers a context in
which to explore what "queer" and "pedagogy" have to offer you and your students.
Facilitators
James Richard Sheldon.
I don't have any co-facilitators in mind.
Course Description (no more than 500 words)
Queer pedagogy is the notion that we need to radically examine and redefine how we think about and conceptualize the act of teaching, our
notions and practices of knowledge, and our formal and informal curriculum.
This course will give students an opportunity to read and discuss readings on these topics and use this knowledge base in order to
construct an individual project implementing the principles of queer pedagogy.
Prerequisites
Some practical experience or coursework in the field of Education would be helpful in understanding the course material. Ability to
read and comprehend readings on the level of a college Junior or above would be helpful as well.
Audience
I imagine that there would be a wide audience for this sort of course. Those that are practicing or researching in the field of education are
sort of the first tier I imagine. But, honestly, anyone doing queer studies or GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans) activism might be interested
as well. I could even see it be interesting to someone with a college education or equivalent who is raising a child and wants to
approach things from that perspective. Or perhaps disenchanted college students who think that their own education leaves something
to be desired and want to find out if there's something different out there.
Experience
I have a Master's degree in Education and my master's thesis was on queer pedagogy. I designed a 5-week version of this course to be
offered in a graduate program at New College of California, but it ended up not being offered when the school suddenly lost their
accreditation.
I am currently working on my special education teaching credential and working in the local public schools. I also designed and taught a ten
week seminar on queer theory and Star Trek in 2004.
